Molds are part of our natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees. However, indoor mold growth should be avoided due to the health risks of being in a closed environment with mold spores and toxins, as well as the structural damage mold can cause to a building.

Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.

Signs of Mold

At times, the evidence of mold in your home or business is unmistakably visible – from mold spores that cause dark or black spotting and staining on walls and cabinetry, to decaying wood and structural damage. However, often visible signs are not readily apparent.

1. You can see it. Visible staining or dark spotting on walls, cabinetry, or other items such as boxes or books - though often visible signs are hidden behind walls.

2. You can smell it. Musty odors in your basement or attic – or coming through your air or dryer vents.

3. You have collected moisture or standing water. Water and moisture is the perfect environment for mold to thrive in and grow.

4. You or your family experience related health issues. Mold spores and toxins cause respiratory issues and allergy symptoms; if the source of the problem is left unchecked, these issues can become serious.

Mold Assessments

All Mold Mitigation efforts should begin with an assessment of your unique situation.

Under New York State law, the mold assessment and the mold remediation services must be performed by two different entities - the same person or business cannot do both. This law helps prevent the homeowner or business owner with the mold concerns; beware contractors that say that can do assessments under the same company that will do your mold mitigation services.

Healthy Spaces Inc. is certified as a mold mitigation specialist in NY State. We can recommend one of several Mold Assessors that we commonly work with and manage the process for you, or you can contact a Mold Assessor of your choice directly. Either way, we will walk through the assessment with you and recommend the best strategies to mitigate your mold problems.

Basement Mold Remediation

Because basements are prone to cool, damp conditions, it is also prone to the growth of mold. In many cases, specially in finished basements, moisture condenses between the finished wall and the foundation of the home due to lack of air flow and the presence of dark and damp conditions. In fact, this is the perfect habitat for mold to grow, where the materials used to build the interior walls provides the food source for growth. Most likely there is a musty odor that is present in the air also.

Basements that are not finished can also harbor mold. Many of the same factors contribute to its presence: moisture, dampness, lack of airflow and lack of heat are all factors. Simply installing a dehumidifier and adding heat will not solve a problem if mold already exists – and it won’t stop mold from spreading unless you have it treated bya professional.

If this is the case, proper treatment of the walls to expel the mold and then sealing of the block, along with a proper dehumidifier can solve the problem. Proper water management and damage repair is the key to ensuring your basement mold problems are treated effectively and don't return.
